How to file your nails safely?

Filing helps keep nails strong and healthy while giving them the desired shape. But, it’s possible to not file properly and cause your nails to become weaker and more uneven. In this article, the nail supply expert Maryton will tell you how to safely file your nails to prevent them from peeling, cracking or breaking.

Choose the right tools

It helps to have the right tools to file your nails to keep them healthy and strong. Here are the tools you’ll need before you get started:

  • Nail clippers: These are useful for trimming long nails before filing them.
  • A nail file: They are gentler on the nails and easier to clean. Nail files should be cleaned to prevent the spread of bacteria. If you can, an electric nail drill would also be a good choice.
  • A nail oil and a cuticle oil: These can help repair frayed nails and prevent future breakage.

Choosing a nail shape

Your nails have a natural shape that is largely genetic, and is usually round or square. The shape of your cuticle and nail bed generally determines the natural shape of your nail. It’s more flattering and easier to maintain if you work with your natural shape. What’s more, it is not recommended to remove the cuticle on toenails or fingernails.

What you should not do

When filing your nails, you should not move the file back and forth across the nail in a sawing motion. This can fray the nail and even damage the nail bed and cuticle. The entire nail may move (like a loose tooth) if you file this way.
